Thumbtack.com: A better alternative to Google and Yellow Pages?

thumbtack.com logoIn the search for a better online service directory, I discovered thumbtack.com this month.  Launched in December 2009, Thumbtack offers us the ability to get multiple quotes, just by filling out a form.

As a consultant, I use thumbtack.com as a venue to advertise my services and generate new business.  As a savvy consumer, you can use it to get quotes from a number of local, qualified professionals, just by filling out a form.  Thumbtack is better than most typical local search directories that simply return business listings (sometimes) with ratings and reviews.  Instead, Thumbtack gives you the ability to vet, contact, and book service professionals the moment you find them.

From the thumbtack.com blog:

Today most people frustratingly browse the paper Yellow Pages and online directories to find local service professionals. If the professional picks up the phone, you’ll describe the work, ask if the pro’s available and at what price. Getting multiple quotes to make sure you’re not getting ripped off is likely to take more than 10 phone calls and several hours.

At Thumbtack we believe there’s a better way. Our new homepage is a gateway to get you the right service service pro in just a few quick clicks. You tell us what service you need and when and where you need it.

We do the rest. We route your request to the best of our 275,000 service pros. You’ll have multiple price quotes in your inbox the next day from pros who are available and qualified. And you’ll never have to pick up a phone, leave voicemails, wait for returned calls or deal with the various other frustrations of finding the best person for your job.

You can ask for just about any service, anywhere in North America.   In February 2012, Thumbtack celebrated registering 250,000 professionals.  When you request a quote, you’ll be asked a few quick questions that will help you describe your needs.  The questions are tailored to the type of service that you want.  The questions allow service professionals like me understand what you need, whether they’re qualified to deliver it, and what they’ll charge.  By knowing the right questions to ask, Thumbtack gets you accurate quotes from the right pros.

So go ahead and give it a try.  I’ve signed up, and you can request a quote for my web design services from thumbtack.com by clicking here.  When you request a quote,

  1. You’ll be asked a few quick questions that will help describe your needs.  Provide as much detail as you can.  The more information you provide, the better I’ll be able to estimate the cost of your project.
  2. You’ll be asked to provide your contact information so I will be able to get in touch with you.  Your full name won’t be displayed.
  3. You’ll have the option to get competing quotes from other qualified service professionals, saving you both time and money.
