New Charlottesville WordPress Meetup

After I taught my WordPress 101 class at the end of May 2014, several of the students wanted more, and they asked me to start a WordPress Meetup group.  I did some research, and I learned that there were no WordPress Meetup groups already in Charlottesville.  So I started a new Charlottesville WordPress Meetup group!

Meeting Times and Locations

Now that we have a new Meetup group,  who is interested in joining, and when and where do you want to meet?  That’s for you to decide!  I’ve created an online survey to answer these questions. The responses will determine where, when, and how often we meet. So please take a few minutes to take the online survey. I’ll post the results in a future newsletter and on the Whispering Web website.

How to Join the Charlottesville WordPress Meetup

You can join the group by visiting the Meetup website, creating a free account, and then joining the Charlottesville WordPress Meetup group.  Creating a Meetup account and joining the group is free, although it does cost me some money as the organizer of the group.

WordPress 101

Speaking of the WordPress 101 class, don’t despair if you missed the May class.  Joe Nasevich will be teaching another 2-session class on Wednesday, September 24 and Wednesday, October 1.  The class will meet from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM each Wednesday night.  This 2-session class will show you the basics of WordPress:

  • Install WordPress
  • Configure a WordPress website
  • Create web pages and blog posts

  • Install and configure plugins

Whether you want to create a blog, post family pictures, or sell your wares, this class is for you.

WordPress

WordPress logoWhat is WordPress?  WordPress is a free, open-source blogging tool and Content Management System (CMS).  It’s based on PHP and MySQL, and it runs on a web-hosting service such as InMotionHosting.

WordPress uses a plugin architecture and a template system.   According to W3Techs, WordPress is used by more than 22.0% of the top 10 million websites in the world.   WordPress is the most popular blogging system in use on the Web.   According to BuiltWith, it dominates the CMS market with nearly half of the market powered by WordPress.  Forbes Magazine estimated that there were 60 million WordPress websites in 2012, and that number has only grown since then.
