WordPress logoCharlottesville WordPress Meetup

The new Charlottesville WordPress Meetup will hold its first meeting on Monday, August 4, 6-8 PM.  We’ll meet at UVA’s Darden School of Business, classroom 140.  RSVP on the Charlottesville WordPress Meetup site.  Directions can also be found on the Meetup site.  Meetups are free to join, so I hope you can attend!

The featured speaker is Nick Skriloff who will discuss Load Testing Your Application. This session begins with a horror story of when a system could not handle the load. With so many visitors looking at your WordPress site, speed is critical to success. This session will show you how to load test your website, measure speed, and do it on a consistent basis.  Nick had previously presented this talk in May 2014.  Slides for the presentation can be found on the WordPress in Higher Education Conference website

We will have time for people to ask specific questions about their own sites or ask the group for feedback on a site as well. Internet access will be available, so bring your laptop!

This is the first meeting of the new Charlottesville WordPress Meetup!  Help set the direction of the group going forward and suggest topics for future meetings.

Whispering Woods will be providing pizza, but please bring your own drinks.

How to Join the Meetup

You can join the meetup simply by visiting the Meetup website, creating a free account, and then joining the Charlottesville WordPress Meetup group.

Directions

Charlottesville WordPress Meetup at UVA Darden School of BusinessFrom the Charlottesville-Albemarle airport, stay straight on Airport Road until you reach the traffic light at the intersection of Airport Road and Route 29. Whispering Woods Web Design released a new website in July 2014 for the Homestead Beach Hotel in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Homestead Beach Hotel

Homestead Beach HotelThe Homestead Beach Hotel is a privately owned 90-room hotel in Ocean City, NJ. Each unit is individually owned, and many owners rent their units during the summer season.  The hotel has an interesting history.  It was built in 1928, renovated in 1977, and later converted to private residences.  Today, each efficiency studio is privately owned and individually decorated.

Remember the guy who asked what the three most important things about real estate? Location, location, location! The Homestead has it in triplicate, because it’s close to the boardwalk and beach, shopping, and dining.

In fact, aside from its unique history, the best thing about the Homestead Hotel is its location.  The hotel is located in the heart of Ocean City with a beach-block location.  That means you can walk out the front door, and take a very short stroll to the boardwalk and beach without ever crossing the street.  In fact, with the exception of the attached restaurant and a yogurt shop, there are no other buildings between the Homestead and the boardwalk.  Many rooms have a view of the Ocean City boardwalk, Music Pier, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Or maybe you want to walk out the front door and turn right instead?  In addition to walking past some of the best breakfast and lunch joints in Ocean City, you’ll soon find yourself strolling along Asbury Avenue – Ocean City’s quaint downtown shopping area.  Asbury Avenue is also the host of a popular semi-annual block party with over 400 crafters, food vendors, music and more.

Of course, all that walking is going to make you hungry. Each unit in the Homestead features a complete kitchenette with stove top and refrigerator, as well as cooking and eating utensils. But there are plenty of dining options as well: the OC Surf Cafe, Varsity Inn, Sindia Restaurant, Manco and Manco’s Pizza, just to name a few.

New Homestead Beach Hotel Website

Whispering Woods redesigned the Homestead website in July 2014, adding image sliders, interactive photos galleries, contact forms, online reservations, and a private bulletin board just for owners. The site also features a responsive design that looks good on mobile devices, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to help customers find it, upgraded security to protect it from hackers, and Google Analytics to track web site usage.  It’s really a sweet site, if I say so myself.  Check it out, and then let us know what you think.

After I taught my WordPress 101 class at the end of May 2014, several of the students wanted more, and they asked me to start a WordPress Meetup group.  I did some research, and I learned that there were no WordPress Meetup groups already in Charlottesville.  So I started a new Charlottesville WordPress Meetup group!

Wordfence Security Fix

Of course, we can’t go a month without mentioning some security vulnerability or the other.  This time it’s a security plugin that is causing a problem!

On June 24, 2014, Wordfence released version 5.1.4 of their popular WordPress security plugin. It fixes a security vulnerability found in Wordfence version 5.1.2 and older.  If you are running Wordfence on your WordPress website, you should update this plugin immediately.
